California photographer Robert Dawson is interested in how photography can be used to understand and shape our relationship with the environment and the public sphere. He has been an instructor at Stanford University since 1996, and has served on the Board of Directors of San Francisco Camerawork, the Friends of Photography (the forerunner of Center for Photographic Art), and is a founding member and continues to serve on the Board of PhotoAlliance in San Francisco.

His work has been widely exhibited and is held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Museum of American Art (Smithsonian Institution) Washington DC, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and others. He has published numerous books over the scope of his career. The complete archive of his widely hailed 2014 book The Public Library: A Photographic Essay was purchased for the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. Mr. Dawson was recently awarded the 2018-19 Fulbright Global Scholar award by the US. Department of State, and his work has also been recognized with a Guggenheim Fellowship, and Artists’ Grants from the Graham Foundation and the Creative Work Fund.
